What is DeepSeek V4.1 Flash?

V4.1 Flash is a general-purpose language model built for speed and low cost. It's the default model in the DeepSeek chat app, so if you've asked DeepSeek a question without switching anything on, Flash almost certainly answered it. It writes, summarises, translates, answers questions, explains concepts and writes code, and it does all of this quickly enough to feel instant.

It sits alongside three other models in the DeepSeek family. V4 Pro is the larger flagship for the hardest, longest work. R1 reasons step by step. Coder specialises in programming. Flash is the one you use by default and switch away from only when a task needs it. If you're brand new to DeepSeek, our beginner's guide covers the basics first.

What's new in V4.1-Flash-1017

The 1017 update is the current build of V4.1 Flash. Chat users get it automatically, and API users keep the same model name. Here's what changed:

ChangeWhat it meansWho benefits most
Stronger project developmentBetter at multi-step, multi-file tasks such as building a feature, wiring up an API or restructuring a small app.Developers using Harness Coding or agent loops
Lower cost per taskFinishes the same work in fewer tokens and fewer retries, so the total bill drops.High-volume API users
Faster responsesShorter wait for the first token and for complete answers.Chat users and customer-facing assistants
Web search & fetch in the APIA request can search the web and read a page before answering, so answers can draw on current information.Apps that need fresh facts - see search & fetch

What V4.1 Flash is good at

TaskHow well Flash does itExample prompt
Writing & editingExcellent for emails, posts, rewrites and first drafts."Rewrite this to sound friendlier, under 80 words."
SummarisingFast, accurate summaries of articles, notes and documents."Summarise this report in five bullets with any deadlines."
TranslationNatural translations between dozens of languages, including Sinhala and Tamil."Translate into formal Sinhala for a government letter."
Q&A & explanationsClear explanations at any level; add Search for current facts."Explain inflation like I'm 15."
Everyday codeScripts, snippets, explanations and small bug fixes."Write a Python script to rename photos by date taken."
Project developmentMuch improved in 1017 for multi-file work inside Harness."Add a login page to this Flask app and update the tests."
Extraction & classificationReliable and cheap at pulling fields out of text at volume."Return name, date and amount from this invoice as JSON."
Chatbots & assistantsLow latency and low cost make it ideal for customer-facing bots.System prompt: "You are the help desk for…"

Worked examples

Example 1 - Turn messy notes into a clear update

Prompt

Turn these notes into a short team update with headings: "mtg w/ vendor tue - price ↑ 8% from Jan, can lock old rate if we sign by 30th. delivery slipping 1 wk. need decision from finance. ruwan to send contract draft."

Flash's answer

Vendor update

Pricing: prices rise 8% from January. We can keep the current rate if we sign by the 30th.
Delivery: delayed by one week.
Decision needed: Finance to approve signing before the 30th.
Next step: Ruwan will send the contract draft.

Example 2 - A small project task in Harness

This is where the 1017 update shows. Given a plain request, Flash reads the relevant files, makes small consistent changes across them, writes a test and runs it, all in a handful of quick turns. Each turn is cheap, so a whole feature like this costs very little.

When to step up: if the change touches architecture or many modules, switch the session to V4 Pro. If a bug is subtle, switch to R1. Both are explained in the Harness guide.

Example 3 - Extract data at volume

Prompt (run once per email, thousands of times)

From the email below, return JSON with customer, order_id, issue (one of: delivery, refund, damaged, other) and urgent (true/false). Email: "Hi, order #48213 arrived with a cracked screen. I need a replacement before Friday - Nimali"

{ "customer": "Nimali", "order_id": "48213", "issue": "damaged", "urgent": true }

Simple, structured and repetitive work like this is what Flash's low price is for. At this volume, using a larger model would cost several times more for the same result.

API quick start

The API is OpenAI-compatible, so existing SDKs work once you change the base URL. Create your key on the API platform. The API guide walks through it step by step.

# pip install openai
from openai import OpenAI
import os

client = OpenAI(api_key=os.environ["DEEPSEEK_API_KEY"],
                base_url="https://api.deepseek.com")

resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="deepseek-chat", # Flash model name - confirm in the API docs
    messages=[
        {"role": "system", "content": "You are a concise assistant."},
        {"role": "user", "content": "Summarise this in 3 bullets: …"},
    ],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)

Keeping costs low with Flash

TechniqueHow it saves moneyHow to do it
Route by difficultyMost traffic doesn't need a bigger model.Send everything to Flash first. Escalate only failures or flagged hard cases to R1 or V4 Pro.
Reuse the same prefixRepeated input can be billed at a lower cached rate.Keep the system prompt and fixed instructions identical, and put them at the start of every request.
Cap output lengthOutput tokens cost more than input tokens.Set max_tokens, and ask for "under 100 words" or "JSON only".
Trim the contextYou pay for every input token you send.Send only the relevant part of a document or chat history, not the whole thing.
Ask for structured outputFewer retries from answers you can't parse.Ask for JSON with named fields and validate it in your code.
Use search only when neededFetched pages add input tokens.Turn on search and fetch only for questions that need current information.

Prompting tips for V4.1 Flash

Do thisWhy it helpsExample
Be specific about the outputFlash is fast at following clear instructions."Five bullets, each under 12 words."
Say who it's forIt changes tone and depth to suit the reader."For a customer who isn't technical."
Give one exampleAn example locks in format and style faster than describing them."Like this: Q3 · Sales · up 12%."
Iterate in the same chatQuick follow-ups are cheap and keep context."Shorter." · "More formal." · "Add a call to action."
Turn on Search for factsWithout it, Flash only knows what it learned in training, up to a cut-off date.Prices, news, opening hours, software versions.
Switch models, not promptsIf Flash keeps getting a hard problem wrong, a different model will help more than rewording.Turn on DeepThink (R1) for logic; pick V4 Pro for long, polished work.

Limits and when to switch models

LimitWhat you'll noticeWhat to do
Hard multi-step reasoningConfident but wrong answers on tricky maths, logic or riddles.Switch on DeepThink to use R1.
Very long, nuanced writingLong reports lose structure or tone towards the end.Outline with Flash, then write the final draft with V4 Pro.
Large refactorsInconsistent changes across many modules.Use V4 Pro in Harness Coding, or Coder for focused code generation.
Knowledge cut-offOut-of-date answers about recent events.Turn on Search in chat, or use search & fetch in the API.
Can be confidently wrongOccasionally invents facts or sources.Check anything important, and ask for sources with Search on.
Busy at peak times"Server busy" messages right after a release.Wait and retry, or use the API, which runs on separate capacity. See troubleshooting.
Bottom line: start every task on Flash. It's the right choice most of the time, and when it isn't, switching takes one tap.

DeepSeek V4.1 Flash - frequently asked questions

Is V4.1 Flash free?

Yes, in the chat app on the web, iOS and Android. Through the API you pay per token, and Flash is the cheapest model in the family. See pricing.

Is V4.1 Flash the default model?

Yes. In the chat app, every message goes to Flash unless you switch on DeepThink (which uses R1) or pick another model.
